- A basic 4 year college degree- This is the first prerequisite that you need to fulfill. It is not required to fly regional US airlines but for major airlines, this is the first criteria without which your application will not be considered. Ideally a Bachelor of Science degree helps.
- Find a local flight school which will teach you and give you the base for a private pilot certificate. A minimum of 40 flight hours are required and average of 60 flight hours is norm.
- A Third Class medical certificate- When you apply for the medical certificate the first time, ensure that you apply for the third class medical from Federal Aviation Administration medical examiner. Ensure that you are prepared for the same and pass it at one go.
- After you get the private pilot license work toward the instrument rating and commercial certificate. Instrument rating needs 50 hours of cross country PIC and 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument conditions.
- To get a commercial certificate you need to complete 250 hours PIC with 50 hours of cross country and 10 hours of dual instruction in complex aircraft.
- Complete the Certified Flight Instructor Rating. Some school offer flight hours in exchange for rating. Utilize this as it will help when you proceed to multi-engine rating.
- Once you have completed 1500 hours of flying time and have good ratings you can get hired by regional airlines.
- The next step would be to enroll for a flight school or opt for military flight training.
- Don’t restrict yourself- Get experience in different flying fields like teaching. Opt to fly charter planes and private airlines.
